Crimean State Medical University

Department of Normal Physiology

During our visit to Simferopol in September 2009, we presented the animal-free teaching materials at the Department of Normal Physiology at Simferopol State Medical University, among others. There, on their own initiative, some animal experiments had already been replaced by Soviet educational films 15 years ago. The remaining animal experiments should now be abolished with our help. Nevertheless, at the time of our visit, 1,200 frogs and 200 mice were still being killed each year for student training in order to demonstrate the physiological properties of nerves, CNS, heart and other organ systems. According to the agreement, all experiments on live and killed animals had to be stopped from 1 September 2010.

Control visit

The control visit took place at the end of November 2010 and everything was to our complete satisfaction. Particularly noteworthy: Prof Elena Evstafyeva and colleagues have published a textbook for the new animal-free curriculum.
