In Eastern Europe, there is great potential to replace animal experiments in higher education with animal-free teaching methods. In this way, animal lives can be saved with relatively simple means. Many university teachers are open to modern, computer-based teaching methods. In most cases, there is just a lack of information and funding. In cooperation with the International Network for Humane Education InterNICHE we are helping on both levels.
Since the beginning of the project in 2008, we have made contracts with the heads of 86 departments in 35 cities mainly in Ukraine, but also in Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bulgaria. The universities have been provided with animal-free teaching methods, such as films and computer programmes, as well as hardware including laptops and projectors. In return, they have stopped carrying out the relevant animal experiments.
As a result, more than 62,000 animals are spared a painful death at universities every year, including around 46,000 vertebrates such as rats, frogs, rabbits, dogs and cats, as well as over 16,000 invertebrates such as insects and crabs.
