National University for Water Management and Natural Resources
Department of Health and Physiotherapy
Until now, the Department of Health and Physiotherapy has conducted the usual range of experiments in organ physiology—primarily due to a lack of alternatives. Each year, 550 frogs, 120 rats, 30 rabbits, and 10 guinea pigs suffered and died for this. Frogs were beheaded to study the functions of the heart, muscles, nerves, central nervous system, blood vessels, and endocrine glands. Rats were used to study the kidneys and intestines, and rabbits to study the respiratory system.
Head of Department Prof Igor Grigus learned about our humane teaching project from Nataliya Gritsay, head of the Department of Biology at Rivne State Humanitarian University, and was immediately willing to join our project. The agreement was signed in March 2015, according to which the university teachers commit to stopping all animal use starting with the new semester on September 1, 2015.
Instead of the animals mentioned above, the donated materials will be used: a projector, four suture models, as well as numerous films on DVD and computer programs.
