Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University
Faculty of Biology, Institute of Animal and Human Physiology
The contact with Prof Andriy Poruchynskiy, Dean of the Faculty of Biology at Lutsk University and Head of the Department of Human and Animal Physiology, came about at a biology congress in Lutsk in September 2009. Dimitrij Leporskij provided information about humane education at an information stand. To date, 157 frogs, 10 rats, 6 guinea pigs and 42 other animals (guinea pigs, rats or rabbits) were killed in this departemt every year in order to study the physiology of nerves, muscles, the central nervous system and other organ systems.
The agreement was signed on 14 December 2010. We provided the department with a projector and numerous multimedia programmes and videos. According to the agreement, all animal experiments were discontinued on 1 September 2011.
At this faculty, animals are killed in the zoology course to illustrate their anatomy. Unfortunately, the head of the Department of Zoology showed no interest in humane education. We hope that this attitude will change thanks to the good example set by Prof Poruchynskiy.
