Donetsk Medical School
Department of Pathophysiology
Particularly cruel animal experiments are common in pathophysiology courses, and Donetsk Medical School is no exception. Various diseases and conditions are induced, e.g. allergic shock, barotrauma, haemorrhage shock, inflammation, lack of oxygen, starvation, pulmonary oedema, crushing, hypoglycaemia, heart failure, pain, suffocation, etc. 420 frogs, 200 rats, 20 guinea pigs, 30 rabbits were killed in this way every year.
In December 2012, we signed an agreement with the Department of Physiology. Thanks to the lecturer Jury Strelchenko and the new dean Prof Sergey Zyablizev, the Department of Pathophysiology followed suit.
The agreement was signed in October 2013, which obliges the Department to discontinue the course's animal experiments on 670 animals per year. Two projectors, two laptops and numerous multimedia programmes, films and suture training models were donated.
