Rostov-on-Don
State Technical University
At the State Technical University in Rostov-on-Don — the largest university in the Southern Russia region with 47,000 students — a new Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was established in 2018. Dean Dr. Sergei Khlebunov and the other faculty members agreed that the faculty should be completely animal-free from the very beginning. This was considered a top priority in the training of future professionals. The only thing missing was suitable animal-free teaching materials.
With the support of InterNICHE, the Russian animal rights organization VITA, and Doctors Against Animal Experiments (DAAE), "Jerry" was purchased — a lifelike dog training model for veterinary students — as well as a large number of computer programs.
With the dog model Jerry, veterinary students can practice listening to the heartbeat, measuring respiratory rate, performing resuscitation after cardiac arrest, treating bone fractures, and more.
