Zaporizhia State Medical University

2nd Faculty of Medicine, Department of Normal Physiology

Prof Oksana Kushch came to us via our trilingual website. She believes that humanity should be paramount in the medical profession. Animal suffering and killing of animals are contrary to humane teaching. Moreover, many medical students do not want to participate in the classes, and they are expensive too. Therefore, she looked for alternatives and found our website.

Dimitrij Leproskij visited the department on 20 January 2017. A laptop, a projector, and numerous simulation programs were handed over, and the agreement was signed. The range of experiments included physiological properties of nerves, muscles, heart, blood, intestines, and hormonal system, as well as the induction of various pathological conditions such as removal of the thyroid gland, hypoglycemic coma, the effects of central nervous system damage on respiration, etc. The experiments on 710 animals (290 rats and 420 frogs) per year will be discontinued starting next semester, i.e., 1st September 2017.

Control visit

The control visit took place on 6 November 2018. Professor Georgy Besarab confirmed the 100% transition to humane education, as laid down in the agreement. This saves many animal lives and protects students from the trauma of having to conduct experiments. The teaching materials offer a modern, progressive way of imparting knowledge, they save time and money, and they are practical, as experiments can be repeated indefinitely without having to kill live animals, explained Georgy Besarab.

Prof Georgy Besarab is teaching normal physiology now in a humane way.
