I.Y. Gorbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University

Department of Clinical Pharmacology

After we had equipped the Department of Physiology at Ternopil State Medical University with animal-free teaching methods in 2011, a professor, Yulia Vadzuk, from the Department of Clinical Pharmacology approached us. The head of department Ivan Klesh, was initially skeptical about animal-free teaching and wanted to wait for the experiences of his colleagues at the Department of Physiology. Thanks to their great satisfaction, he was ready to change to humane education by the end of 2012.

In January 2013, our Ukrainian project leader, biologist Dimitrij Leporskij, visited the university for an initial pressentation and witnessed the cruel animal experiments still being practiced there. Rats were sometimes operated on without adequate anesthesia.

These cruelties will finally be a thing of the past. Just four weeks later, the agreement was signed. We provided the department with a laptop, suture models, and several computer programs. 105 rats, guinea pigs, and pigs will no longer be tortured to death each year.
