Iryna Tymchenko, the associate professor of Kyiv Medical University, got to know about us from our website. Also, the rector of the university, Prof. Boris Ivnev, was also interested in a close cooperation.
Most of the experiments carried out on animals are in the field of pathological and normal physiology. Up to 350 frogs, 205 rats, 55 rabbits and 15 guinea-pigs are being used and killed per year. The experiments in the field of pathophysiology are particularly cruel and include anaphylactic shock in guinea-pigs, experimental embolism in frogs, acute hypoxia and toxic lung edema in rats, starvation in rabbits and rats to name only a few of the broad variety of experiments.
Although not all of the experiments are possible to demonstrate to the students due to financial and other reasons, those left require alternatives for replacement.
The recently by DAAE and InterNICHE developed software on pathophysiology is adapted for Ukrainian curriculum allowing complete replacement of experiments.
The agreement was signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Associate Professor of the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine, Iryna Mykolaivna Tymchenko, on 18th July 2024. By this, the faculty undertakes to manage and develop the educational process for students without the use of living or killed animals, or animal tissue derived from killed animals, from 1st September 2024 onwards.
A laptop, a multimedia projector, and methodological recommendations on "The Use of Alternative Methods in the Study of General Pathophysiology" as well as several CD's with physiology simulation programmes.
The Rector of Kyiv Medical University, Boris Ivnev, believes that collaboration will promote the implementation of modern and humane teaching methods, allowing students to acquire up-to-date knowledge and skills using advanced technologies and simulators.
