These methodological recommendations are published with the financial support of the German animal rights organization "Doctors Against Animal Experiments" (www.aerzte-gegen-tierversuche.de) "The Use of Alternative Methods in the Study of General and Toxicological Pharmacology".

The methodological recommendations discuss the possibility of applying alternative methods that exclude the use of animals in the study of general and toxicological pharmacology. The publication is based on the many years of pedagogical experience of the staff of the Department of Pathophysiology at Donetsk National Medical University named after M. Gorky, as well as the Department of Pharmacology and Medical Prescription with a course of normal physiology at Zaporizhzhia State Medical University.

The methodological recommendations correspond to the main sections on general and toxicological pharmacology; they contribute to a better understanding of theoretical positions, practical skills in studying the questions of the mechanism of action of drugs, as well as various intoxications, approaches to providing medical assistance for poisonings by substances of different origins.

The methodological recommendations include a CD with simulator programs, which visually demonstrate the effect of drugs on the body's systems. It also covers the main experimental models of pathological processes in intoxications by different substances: it depicts the symptoms of poisoning and the basic antidote therapy.

Recommended for the training of general practitioners of all specialties for conducting practical classes and independent studies.

The authors would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Corina Gericke, a representative of the organization "Doctors Against Animal Experiments" (Germany), and Nick Jukes – coordinator of InterNICHE for their help in publishing the manual.
